My name is Andrew Bauer and I’m running for a seat on the Westfield Board of Education. I am a ten-year resident of Westfield with three kids currently in the district, attending Westfield High School, Edison Intermediate School and Tamaques Elementary School.
I am running for a seat on the Board because I believe deeply in the impact of a public education on our children. I feel that there is no better way that I can serve this community than to work to make our great schools even better.
I believe that I have a number of attributes that would allow me to serve this community well:
I have kids in 3 schools in the district
As a parent with kids in elementary, intermediate and Westfield High School, I am experiencing all of the same concerns and challenges as parents across this town. If I have the privilege to serve as a Board member, you can be sure that I will consider each topic and issue through the eyes of an engaged policymaker, as well as an invested district parent.
I have a strong accounting & finance background
The annual school budget in Westfield is $108 million. Sixty percent of our property taxes fund almost the entirety of that budget. It is critical that Board members have an understanding of the budget and finances, so as to be a careful steward with your tax dollars. I am a former certified public accountant (CPA) and spent 10 years working in accounting and finance at some of the largest accounting firms and investment banks in the country.
I have technology expertise
I have spent the last seven years leading an early stage technology firm in New York City that collaborates with thousands of schools around the world. During that time I have gained a deep appreciation for the role of technology in schools and have observed a range of successes and failures. I believe I can leverage those learnings to assist our schools’ drive towards innovation and implement best practices.
